"Intermittence penetrates to the very core of our being, and film vibrates in a way that is close to this core." In his book Devotional Cinema, filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky identifies the feeling of illness or health that follows experiencing certain films, and locates as the cause a film's ability to "mirror and realign our metabolism." For example, the intermittent quality of light in film projection is not unlike our natural vision or the way we experience life (with gaps and moments of the unknown). Similarly, we watch films in a dark cinema like we watch the illuminated world "from the dark theater of our skull." Dorsky and his partner Jerome Hiler have developed this theory of cinema alongside a filmmaking practice that is equally concerned with our chemical relationship to film. Experiments with in-camera editing, spontaneity, beautifully layered superimpositions, polyvalent form, silence, and silent speed projection (at 18 frames per second) define some of their work. As Dorsky aptly describes it, the films involve humans beyond mere depiction by creating a form that has human qualities and characteristics. One gets the sense that the films are alive; watching the film turns into conversing, thinking, and breathing with the film. Focusing a sensitive attention on cinema and its unique qualities, Dorsky and Hiler have created a body of work which spans their early experiments of the 60s to new films today — films that uncover simultaneously elemental and unknown things i...

Jerome Hiler has been shooting 16mm film since the early 1960s, creating a body of work characterized by an appreciation for the textures and shapes of ordinary surroundings and the unique way a motion-picture camera can relate to familiar objects. He has rarely exhibited his work in public, preferring to screen for a circle of friends, and refining films in response to the interests of his audiences. Rather than making prints, Hiler has allowed the only copies of his films to be destroyed by time and the wear of the projector, resulting in an ephemeral body of work. By projecting the camera originals only, however, he allows for the most vivid colors. Words of Mercury, his latest, is a study of variations on superimposition, each sequence carefully composed in-camera by rolling back and re-exposing the film in the course of production, creating a series of elaborately layered images bearing the rich luminosity of stained glass, their simultaneous levels of movement yielding a hypnotic, phantom depth.

Ruling Star is an episodic meditation on the incommunicable aspects of life in a strange place called California. As the sun bleaches the grasses before summer begins, we set forth to visit a miscellany of locales while we search for a clue of time’s passage. A pileup of illusions defeats my quest and leaves me in love with the unknowableness. Bagatelle I is a film with a thread of portraiture running through it. We meet an artist clinging to a fence during a break from his workplace. The walls of his world are formidable and highly energetic.

Words of Mercury is a silent film projected at 18fps. It has many layers of super-impositions which were all shot in the camera. It moves from a stark wintery world and slowly develops into a place of overgrowth and richness that is almost suffocating and re-invites death.
